Story of 제주도 (“Jeju-do”). My mother’s origin.Dedicated to my daughter and my culture.Christy 현숙 (“Hyonsuk”) is a Korean American mix medium abstract artist whose vibrant work is deeply inspired by childhood summers spent on 제주도 (“Jeju-do”), her mother’s homeland. Each summer her family visited the island where the lush landscapes, volcanic shores, and cultural textures left an indelible mark on her creative spirit. Her work is known for its expressive use of color and layered compositions, echoing the shifting light and rich textures of 제주 (“Jeju”) natural beauty.Working primarily in acrylic paints, Christy explores themes of memory, belonging, and the dynamic interplay between heritage and personal identity. Through her art, she aims to evoke the vibrant atmosphere and emotional resonance of Jeju Island, bringing her memories to life on canvas.
제주도 (“Jeju-do”) = Jeju Island in Korean도 “Doe” is a syllable used after naming an island in the Korean language.

돌하르방 (“Dol Ha Rue Bahng”)제주도 (“Jeju-do”) is covered with volcanic rock statues called 돌하르방 (“Dol Ha Rue Bahng”) means Rock Grandpa on 제주도 (“Jeju-do”) . No one knows where these statue originated from, however, locals believed the statues were guardians against evil spirits. Today the 돌하르방 (“Dol Ha Rue Bahng”) is a symbol of Jeju Island.

Before the Korean War in 1950, the villagers of 제주도 (“Jeju-do”) hid in volcanic caves for shelter and protection. Protection from humans slaughtering humans. Over 30,000 civilians were reported slaughtered. The exact number of people slaughtered is still to be determined, and many are reported missing.I enjoyed my summers with my grandfather 제주도 (“Jeju-do”). Unfortunately, I never got to meet his brothers.
